Little Hearts For His Glory, Unit 14

Little Hearts For His Glory, LHFHG

This year, we are using Heart of Dakota’s Little Hearts For His Glory curriculum.
It is adaptable for children ages 5 – 7.  To read more about our choice,

Alex is 6 years old.

Alex is learning right now that history is HIS story – the story of God’s world!

This was kind of fun!  After reading the story of the Good Samaritan, we drew a picture of the injured man.  I drew an outline of the man, and Alex drew his clothing and features.  Then we used a red crayon to draw his “ouchies”.  Afterwards, we gently rubbed the ouchies and covered each one with a bandaid to show how the Good Samaritan cared for him.

One of our Bible story truths this week was the story of the Prodigal Son.
We acted out the story with our duplo farm.

This week’s verse was Matthew 7:12 – “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”

Each week also includes 1 or 2 devotions from Devotions For The Children’s Hour.  These are neat lessons that are just right for a 5 or 6 year old.  I don’t know how much Alex retains from these, but they hold his interest while I am reading!

All About Reading, AAR

Nothing this week – we are starting AAR 2 next week!!

(Please keep in mind that I have the older version of LHFHG, and if you purchase a new guide, your math will follow a different sequence than what we are doing.  I created my own spreadsheet to match the math activities in the older version of LHFHG to the lessons in Singapore Essentials.  It’s not perfect, but it will work for us!)

- making fingerprints on paper to show that no two fingerprints are the same -
God made us all unique!

- learning about reflective/non-reflective objects -
This tied into our lesson on Jesus’ transfiguration & shining like his clothes were reflecting light.  We used potholders, washclothes, spoons, aluminum foil, mirrors, and other objects to determined which ones show a reflection.

We are using Happy Handwriting and Rod & Staff ABC series.

I can’t find any pictures!  We have completed lowercase handwriting through letter m.  I don’t know that I love these handwriting pages.  I may use them for review in the future, but I don’t think I’d go the same route with Max & Jensyn.  There’s nothing wrong with them at all, but I think I want something different next time around.

We are right at the end of Do It Carefully, and we’ll be moving on to Finding The Answers soon.  Alex is excited, as he really enjoys these books!

I don’t have any pictures, but again I will say that the boys are LOVING these stories!  It’s hard to set the book down after only one chapter, as they really want to know what’s going to happen next!  The stories have such a different style from a modern children’s book, and it doesn’t appeal to every child, but they are SO FUN for my boys.  I love the character lessons and Christian lessons that Carrie pulls out of these stories.  This might be one of my favorite parts of Little Hearts For His Glory, simply because I would NEVER have discovered these books on my own!

Oh…um…that would be the Good Samaritan project that I posted above in the History category…

I’ve been looking into options for digging more into the Bible with the kids.  It’s been really on my heart to teach them more of the Bible, showing them how to dig in and learn more.   We are now using Bible Study Guide For All Ages beginner student pages.

I had originally been thinking about starting this next fall with our new school year, but at a friend’s encouragement (thanks, Stefanie!) we started our 2014 school days with this program.

All three kiddos are enjoying it and learning so much!  It begins by going SLOWLY through the story/truths of Joseph.  Along with this, though, there are also Bible facts, songs that teach Bible knowledge, and character lessons.  It only takes about 15 minutes to complete, but there’s so much to learn!  Even Jensyn is understanding much of what we do…as long as she can use a PINK crayon! Open-mouthed smile

I’ll try to dedicate a separate post to BSGFAA sometime, but we are truly enjoying these pages together!
