Little Hearts For His Glory, Unit 20

(Unit 20 completed in late Feb/early March)

This year, we are using
Heart of Dakota’s Little Hearts For His Glory curriculum.
It is adaptable for children ages 5 – 7.  To read more about our choice,

Alex is learning right now that history is HIS story – the story of God’s world!

Now that we are getting to history stories, it’s FUN introducing Alex to the globe!  I asked for a globe for Christmas, and it has REALLY coming in handy for school time lately.  We’ve mainly been in Europe, reading about St. Patrick (Ireland), Boniface (Holland/Germany), Charles The Great, Alfred The Great, and King Richard.

The goal is not to memorize all of this history at a young age, but to be exposed to true stories about famous people throughout history.  Most of our readings share an entertaining story about each historical figure, ensuring that young readers (listeners) will enjoy hearing the tale!  The bonus is that Alex is also being exposed to world geography!

Alex has been memorizing Psalm 119:105, and learning how God’s Word should guide the choices we make.

We are finishing All About Reading Level 1 – and moving on to level 2 – this year.

We’re still just enjoying good books together…we’ll be back to AAR soon! (Well, in real life, we’re back at it, but in real life we’re already in Unit 22 of LHFHG now!) It’s been nice to take a break from structured phonics.  Alex just seemed ready to take a little time off, so we did. I don’t want to push too hard & have Alex burned out on phonics, so I am trying to follow his lead.

(Please keep in mind that I have the older version of LHFHG, and if you purchase a new guide, your math will follow a different sequence than what we are doing.  I created my own spreadsheet to match the math activities in the older version of LHFHG to the lessons in Singapore Essentials.  It’s not perfect, but it will work for us!)

The Little Hearts manual math activities are always so fun!  One day, we drew a barn, a field, and a pond.  We had “black sheep” (chocolate chips) and “white sheep” (white chocolate chips). Alex used the paper scene to build math problems about the sheep, writing the math facts on a white board.

We read about King Richard and Blondel for history, and then we were to explore musical instruments for our science discovery.  Since we did school during little sister’s naptime on this day, we skipped it.

We are using Happy Handwriting and Rod & Staff ABC series.

I really should take pictures of his “Finding The Answers” work, shouldn’t I?  Sorry!  This is one of Alex’s favorite things each day.  The Rod & Staff ABC series is GREAT for fine motor skills, thinking skills, and learning/reviewing basic skills.

It’s only a few more weeks before I can tell you about the new spelling program we’re reviewing!  (If you’re pretty familiar with homeschool curriculum, you may be able to make a guess which NEW spelling program this is.)
It’s always fun when little brother’s name pops up during a spelling lesson! Open-mouthed smile

This week, we started reading “Chatterer The Red Squirrel”.  Alex is completing a sentence to help relate a story from Chatterer Squirrel to his own life.

Confession: I thought this project sounded pretty pointless, so we skipped it.  When I mentioned that on the Little Hearts Facebook group, many moms told me they felt the same way, but that their kiddos REALLY enjoyed and remembered this project.

So if you’re reading this in preparation for doing Unit 20 with your own child, *DO THE PROJECT!* Open-mouthed smile

We are still LOVING these pages from Dream Big Kinders!

Although they are CC aligned, I see no harm in these fun, adorable pages.  I only see a great deal of skill building, keeping those skills fresh, and introducing new skills.
