In this unit, we learned the letter Ss for sun.

My kids ALWAYS love Moonbear’s Shadow, but Max’s favorite (which was new to use this time around) was definitely Sun Bread! We read Sun Bread every day, and Max was SOOOO excited to make our own sun bread at the end of the unit!

Once or twice a week, we start our school day with a YouTube playlist of 4-6 songs/videos that go along with our current school lessons. Wedidn’t watch a sun-specific video, but this is one of our favorite MFW K videos.
We don’t exactly do calendar time the MFW K way. We print a calendar page from HERE (preK and K options available), and Max fills in the numbers. For September, we took turns. Max does a pretty good job with his numbers. I love the cute backwards four, though!
For the rest of our calendar time, we’re using a foam board that we can bring out during school time (and put away later, as our kitchen table is our school room). Right now, we’re:
- adding a straw for each school day to our place value pocket chart
- writing that school day’s number on the MFW K 100 Chart (not pictured…on the left side of the board)
- singing a Days Of The Week and Months Of The Year song while Max points to the day/month on the board.
We read Scriptures and brief devotions from the teacher’s guide each day, and we did a little hands-on blindfold activity to understand WHY we need a light to guide us.

We also did the official MFW K handwriting page, but I don’t have a picture of it.

Ironically, I can’t find a picture of the MFW K official math page for this unit!

Max LOVES math, so I made the page below for him based on one on that I found (for free) HERE. I prefer a different tracing font than what she used, so I designed my own. I don’t plan to share it, due to copyright, so I’ll just direct you to the original author’s site. (I later discovered she offers it in multiple fonts, but I’d already designed my own by that point…scroll down in her blog post to see multiple font options.)
We’re using butterscotch chips as manipulatives to fill in the ‘ten frame’, and we’re then using the same butterscotch chips to work on ‘even/odd’, ‘1 more’ and ‘1 less’. He may eat the chips when he’s finished with the page. (We’ll have to switch to raisins as the numbers get higher, as I don’t want him eventually eating 26 butterscotch chips!)
We experimented with shadows on our patio.
I cheated and gave us a head start on the raisins experiment this year by using some grapes that had fallen to the bottom of the produced drawer in our fridge – they were already well on their way to becoming raisins! They were at different stages of ‘shriveling’, which made for a fun activity of lining them up in order.
A bee was enjoying the raisin on the far right, so it’s falling apart!
I completely forgot to do the sundial this time around! Whoops!
All three of my children enjoyed painting a sun and making a pattern for the sun’s rays.

Max did the pattern perfectly, but his paints got mixed and you can’t really tell.
For the Sun unit, we made the recipe found on the back of the book Sun Bread. Other than being a very sticky dough, this recipe was pretty simple. Although it looks fancy, it was pretty easy to put together this sun. Max did is almost entirely on his own!
(Bake it for about HALF the time recommended by the book…our sun has a ‘sunburn’!)
I love making bread, and I make homemade breads regularly. This had a heavier texture than a typical homemade bread, more like a homemade biscuit, but it tasted terrific. I liked it, but it will never be a favorite. The kids LOVED it, though!
Since we’re doing school in our kitchen, we don’t really have a place there to display their work. We have bulletin boards hanging in the stairway to our bonus room. Each child has their own board to display school work.
It’s nearly impossible to get all three boards in one picture, so here’s the view from the top of the stairs. Max’s boad is on the right, covered with Ss Sun papers!
(Jensyn is 3.5 years old.)
I don’t insist on participation from Jensyn. She is free to join us or to wander away, but so far, she almost always wants to be a part of MFW K! She sits with us as we read picture books, does the art or science projects, and completes papers or puzzles at the table. She loves the Lauri alphabet puzzle included in MFW K!
My only goal for her this year is to learn the uppercase alphabet letters, and you may notice that in many of the activities that she’s working on…
(I’ve said it again, but just for the record– we DO comb her hair, but she doesn’t like me to wet it down or use hair gel if we’re just staying home, so it gets fly-away and crazy!)
